両足院とは
両足院は花街・祇園に隣接し、京都の文化を育んできた臨済宗建仁寺派の寺院です。大本山建仁寺の14ある塔頭寺院のひとつで、創建以来、文学や美術の発展に貢献し、禅の教えをもとに人々が知性と共感性を磨く場として開かれてきました。
Adjacent to Kyoto's unique Gion district, Ryosokuin Temple of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism has greatly contributed to Kyoto’s cultural landscape. As one of the 14 sub-temples of Kenninji, it has served as a center of intellectual and artistic growth since its founding in 1358.
その成り立ちは、1358年にさかのぼります。両足院は、建仁寺35世、龍山徳見の墓所として開かれました。龍山徳見は建仁寺の開山栄西禅師と同じ黄龍派を継承し、五山文学という禅特有の文学発展に大きく貢献した僧侶です。その代表的な弟子には、日本に餡子入りの饅頭を広めた林浄因などがいます。後代の住職は、文学にとどまらず、上田秋成や伊藤若冲など、文化人との交流も広げていきました。
現代においても国内外のアーティストや研究者と交流を続け、創建以来の学びの精神を引き継いでいます。自然、そして美術や工芸の輝きを引き出し、その力によって参拝に来た人が自己と向き合える場所であり続けるようにと願っています。
Founded in 1358, Ryosokuin was established as the resting place of Ryozan Tokumi, the 35th successor of Kenninji. A revered priest in the Hwangryu school of Zen Buddhism—like Kenninji’s founder, Eisai Zenji—Ryozan Tokumi played a significant role in advancing Gozan literature, a distinct Zen literary tradition.
Our goal is to offer a place where visitors can connect with nature, art, and craftsmanship and, through these experiences, reflect on themselves.

Get off at Keihan Gion-Shijo Station, head east for two traffic lights, turn south onto Hanamikoji Street, and walk for 7 minutes.
10 minutes on foot from Hankyu Kawaramachi Station.From JR Kyoto Station, please use the city bus, or it’s a 48-minute walk.
By City Bus
From JR Kyoto Station, take city buses 206 or 100.
Get off at Shijo Keihan, then walk 5 minutes south along Yamato-oji Street.
Get off at Higashiyama Yasui, then walk 2-3 minutes west along Yasui Street.
Get off at Minamiza-mae, then walk 10 minutes.
Get off at Gion, then walk 10 minutes.
※両足院では、拝観・坐禅体験・写経・御守り作り体験などにお越しの皆さまに、公共交通機関のご利用をお願いしております。 建仁寺の境内には車両の乗り入れができません。
お車でお越しの際は、建仁寺の外にあるコインパーキングをご利用いただき徒歩にてお越しください。 皆さまのご理解とご協力をお願い申し上げます。
Vehicles are not permitted within the grounds of Kenninji.
We kindly ask all visitors to Ryosokuin use public transportation when visiting for temple tours,
Zen meditation experiences, Sutra copying, or Amulet Crafting Experiences.
If you arrive by car, please use the coin parking lots located outside Kenninji and walk to our temple from there.
